What if work-life balance does not exist?
Call it a work-life balance, or life-work balance, I don't care.
I've never had one and probably never will.
And I decided to stop making it a problem.
If you're a passionate entrepreneur, overwhelmed parent, ambitious overthinker, or someone in between, and W-L-B gives you goosebumps, making you feel like you're failing at life,
I see you.
This email is for you.
Work vs. Life
Let's be honest about the current setup.
The demands of modern life (+ digital world, + late-stage capitalism) make it literally impossible to achieve any meaningful balance.
What if we stopped judging ourselves and completely let go of the concept?
What annoys me about the whole work-life equation is how it places work outside of life.
It presents work as a symbol of effort and stress.
While life stands for fun and pleasure.
Just think about the division it creates in us!
At work, we expect ourselves to function like a well-oiled machine. Forgetting we are humans - with our specific needs, energy, and menstrual cycles.
When these are ignored, there's very little of our human self left at the end of the day.
No surprise we don't have the energy to enjoy life, be fully present with our loved ones, or even think about having sex with our partners.
No amount of work-life balance or wellness practices can fix that.
We need something more radical than that.
We need to heal the way we work.
You deserve to be happy and fulfilled
If you agree that work is not separate from life but an integral part...
...and that it takes up usually 8 hours of your day (1/3 of our life!),
it's clear we need to bring more of ourselves into the work, not less.
And by that, I don't mean giving more to our work. But being more human about it.
We need to stop re-creating the constant split between:
our professional (machine-like) self
and private (human) self.
So what does it look like to work in an embodied way?
It looks deceivingly simple.
But over time, these tiny check-ins can be revolutionary. They'll help you:
connect deeply with yourself
prioritize your needs over the demands of others
and avoid spiraling into panic.
Life becomes more simple
Working in an embodied way simplifies life.
When you're able to stay connected to your body during your workday, you don't need complex self-care routines and practices to bring yourself back at the end of the day.
You also get to enjoy your work more.
The transitions between work mode and rest mode become much easier too.
Because when you work in an embodied way,
you show up as your whole self.
So that when you get home, you don't have to remember who you are first.
I'm curious, what's your relationship with work-life balance?
